The Beer Store Doesn't Waste a Drop: Toronto Hydro's Featured Conservation Customer
CNW (September 15, 2009) - By putting over-consumption 'on ice', The Beer Store, is bridging the gap between wanting to conserve electricity and actually doing it. Continuing to walk the talk on conservation, The Beer Store recently participated in the Toronto Hydro-Electric System ("Toronto Hydro") Power Savings Blitz program retrofitting 42 retail stores across Toronto. Thanks to the Power Saving Blitz program, The Beer Store will save approximately 184,000 kilowatt hours a year (kWh), removing approximately 38.5 tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions from the environment, the equivalent of nearly 8 cars off the road for one year.
Toronto Hydro is pleased to recognize The Beer Store as the latest 2009 Customer for Conservation for being a business customer who believes strongly in conservation and is actively devoted to working towards a culture of conservation in Toronto.
Toronto Hydro's Power Savings Blitz Program was developed for small businesses and individually-metered buildings using 50 kW or less. The program focuses on efficient lighting upgrades.
Not only is The Beer Store taking action to conserve electricity, it is achieving success as a global leader in the practice of extended producer responsibility taking back all of the packaging materials it sells: bottles, cans, cartons, caps, kegs, plastic bags and can rings. This emphasis on reusing and recycling containers and packaging frees up landfill space and significantly reduces pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Ontarians. In addition to using electricity responsibly, The Beer Store continues to practice social responsibility; actively promoting responsible use and ensuring responsible sales of its products.
QUOTES
"The Beer Store is very pleased to be recognized by Toronto Hydro for its energy reduction efforts", said Beer Store president, Ted Moroz. "Without taking our eye off our highly successful and widely recognized deposit return system, we have broadened our focus to include the pursuit of energy reduction in recent years. This award is a much appreciated recognition of our efforts in this important area" added Moroz. In addition to the Power Savings Blitz energy conservation program the Beer Store also continues to seek out and implement new strategies to reduce energy use throughout its Retail Stores and Logistics Distribution Centres in the areas of truck operations and refrigeration to name a few.
Toronto Hydro Corporation President and CEO, David O'Brien commented, "from hundreds of small convenience stores to a world-class organization like The Beer Store, the success and uptake of our Power Savings Blitz is a clear example of how saving electricity and money is easy to do. I applaud The Beer Store and am sure that they will continue to lead by example."
