Toronto—The Beer Store is pleased to have been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers 2025. This award recognizes employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness and exemplify initiatives that symbolize the brand to external employees and partners to the organization.
This recognition is timely as The Beer Store recently published their annual Stewardship Report that celebrates achievements made in year, most notably surrounding the deposit return system and represents the efforts from all employees across the business.
“In collaboration with brewers, commodity buyers, and Ontarians, we ensure that our recycling system upholds the highest standards of sustainability. This recognition paired with our annual report, demonstrates the incredible work the entire TBS team has put forth as leaders in sustainability.” Said Roy Benin, President & Chief Executive Officer. “At The Beer Store, sustainability leadership is a core value. We are proud to act as stewards for our communities and consider the environment in our actions.”
This year’s Stewardship Report Delivering Circular Solutions for Ontario is a celebration of achievements made in 2024 specific to The Beer Store's deposit return system for beer containers and the Ontario Deposit Return Program (ODRP) for containers that include wine and spirit bottles purchased outside of the TBS system. In 2024, approximately 1.6 billion beverage alcohol containers were collected from Ontario consumers and reused or recycled at the highest order to advance our circular economy.
Throughout 2024, The Beer Store contributed to several circular economy milestones:
• TBS collected approximately 1.6 billion containers for reuse or recycling.
• TBS collected more containers than were sold in our system in 2024.
• 176,818 tonnes of material was collected by TBS for reuse or recycling, ensuring this material was diverted from landfills and kept out of our communities, parks, and waterways.
• The estimated avoided emissions of reusing or recycling this material is equal to about 195,301 metric tonnes of CO2. This is equivalent to taking approximately 45,555 cars off the road for an entire year!
• TBS was able to donate towards charities and organizations through empty container deposit and monetary donations. TBS was able to raise just over $600,000 through empty container donations alone in 2024.
